Getting Its Kicks: a Vlba Parallax for the Hyperfast Pulsar B1508+55

چکیده
The highest velocity neutron stars establish stringent constraints on natal kicks, asymmetries in supernova core collapse, and the evolution of close binary systems. Here we present the first results of a long-term pulsar astrometry program using the VLBA. We measure a proper motion and parallax for the pulsar B1508+55, leading to model-independent estimates of its distance (2.37 −0.20 kpc) and transverse velocity (1083 −90 km s ), the highest velocity directly measured for a neutron star. We trace the pulsar back from its present Galactic latitude of 52.3 to a birth site in the Galactic plane near the Cyg OB associations, and find that it will inevitably escape the Galaxy. Binary disruption alone is insufficient to impart the required birth velocity, and a natal kick is indicated. A composite scenario including a large kick along with binary disruption can plausibly account for the high velocity. Hyperfast pulsars as the remnants of massive stars ejected from young star clusters
Recent proper motion and parallax measurements for the pulsar PSR B1508+55 indicate a transverse velocity of ∼ 1 100 kms, which exceeds earlier measurements for any neutron star. The spin-down characteristics of PSR B1508+55 are typical for a non-recycled pulsar, which implies that the velocity of the pulsar cannot have originated from the second supernova disruption of a massive binary system....
متن کاملPrecision Astrometry with the Very Long Baseline Array: Parallaxes and Proper Motions for 14 Pulsars
Astrometry can bring powerful constraints to bear on a variety of scientific questions about neutron stars, including their origins, astrophysics, evolution, and environments. Using phase-referenced observations at the VLBA, in conjunction with pulsar gating and in-beam calibration, we have measured the parallaxes and proper motions for 14 pulsars. The smallest measured parallax in our sample i...
متن کاملSub-Milliarcsecond Precision of Pulsar Motions: Using In-Beam Calibrators with the VLBA
We present Very Long Baseline Array phase-referenced measurements of the parallax and proper motion of two pulsars, B0919+06 and B1857–26. Sub-milliarcsecond positional accuracy was obtained by simultaneously observing a weak calibrator source within the 40′ field of view of the VLBA at 1.5 GHz. We discuss the merits of using weak close calibrator sources for VLBI observations at low frequencie...
متن کاملPulsar Astrometry with the VLBA
Many features of the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) contrive to make it the best telescope for pulsar astrometry. The measured proper motions and parallaxes allow distances and transverse velocities to be determined. These in turn provide clues to questions spanning nuclear astrophysics on scales of 10−23 m to the distribution of gas in the Galaxy on scales of 10 m. Three pulsars are discussed...
متن کاملParallax and Kinematics of PSR B0919+06 from VLBA Astrometry and Interstellar Scintillometry
Results are presented from a long-term astrometry program on PSR B0919+06 using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array. With ten observations (seven epochs) between 1994–2000, we measure a proper motion μα = 18.35±0.06 mas yr−1, μδ = 86.56±0.12 mas yr−1, and a parallax π = 0.83± 0.13 mas (68% confidence intervals). This yields a pulsar distance of 1.21± 0.19 kpc, making PSR B0919+06 the farthest pul...
